Let’s face it! The student loan crisis is an enormous problem. For decades people have been brainwashed into believing a college education guarantees them a better income. While this might be true for some, what is certain is that these students and sometimes parents, relatives, and friends as co-signers take out an enormous debt for this education. The cost of attending trade schools can be as expensive as attending a college. Unfortunately, few people consider the problems of repaying these loans. As a Las Vegas area bankruptcy attorney, Dorothy Bunce of A Fresh Start Law has spent many years looking for solutions to resolve student loan debts inside and outside Bankruptcy.

Preparation is Key. Some Strategies to Help Us Help You.

  • Review your loans. How many student loans do you have? What do you owe on each one? What types of loans do you have? When did you last pay on them? Are these loans current, in forbearance, deferment, or default? Did someone cosign these loans?
  • Set up a plan. If you are working, what can you afford to pay? Do you have any unusual financial obligations, such as supporting others who cannot work? Have you had other bumps in the road that limit your ability to pay?
  • Look at the student loan programs. There are programs to lower your payments if you have federal student loans. Yes, these programs are confusing because there are a lot of them. But, unfortunately, you might lose these benefits if you pick the wrong one and pay more than you should. How can you obtain this information?

The federal government has a one-stop process for obtaining your student loan information. However, because your information needs to be kept confidential, please refrain from using a public Wi-Fi connection or your phone to access this website, as the information you obtain may not be secure.

Begin by visiting www.studentaid.gov and selecting the “Login” option. Log in using your FSA ID and password. A security warning page will pop up. Read this page carefully before continuing by selecting “Accept.”

Next, you will enter your Student Aid Dashboard. Although a menu is displayed at the top of the page, please disregard it for now. You want to choose “View Details,” which is in the first box on the page, and contains the balance of your federal student loans.

Making this selection takes you to a page titled “Aid Summary.” On the right-hand side of the first text box is a link to “Download My Aid Data.” Once you are sure you can safely store this information, click that link. You will see additional advisory warnings regarding the proper handling of this important information. Please follow these instructions carefully before proceeding to download the file.

Finally, make sure to note WHERE you saved this file on your computer or storage device.

Now that you have this information, you can open it and review the contents. However, please refrain from saving the file again, because if you hire a student loan attorney, they will need it in its pure state to use their student loan software.

Student Loan Forgiveness Exists Today!

On July 4, 2025, President Trump signed the “Big Beautiful Bill,” which was passed by Congress and resulted in the elimination of various government programs. One of the affected programs was the SAVE program, one of the income-driven programs which aimed to lower student loan payments.
While other income-driven student loan programs still exist, due to confusion among government workers and the removal of these programs from the US Department of Education, many applicants for the remaining programs are being improperly denied benefits. This is why applying for these programs is no longer a “do-it-yourself” process.
  • Your career: Do you work for the government, a non-profit organization, as a teacher, nurse, doctor, lawyer, or in the military? If so, there is a special affordable income-based program. If you make payments on time for 10 years, the government will forgive your remaining student loan debt.
  • Your income: Many repayment programs base your student loan payments on your income and family obligations. The government will then forgive any remaining balance if you make these lower payments on time for 20-25 years.
  • Extraordinary circumstances: Death, identity theft, or unknowingly obtaining student loans can excuse your obligation to repay student loan debts.
  • Undue Hardship: If you or a family member has an extraordinary hardship that makes it impossible to repay your student loans, even at a reduced rate, the government might be willing to forgive these debts immediately.

Solving your debt problems is our only business.
